Multi-county group aims to increase reading scores in Alabama

On Monday, December 6, community leaders from Autauga, Elmore, Lowndes, Macon, and Montgomery Counties are gathering at The LAB on Dexter, located at 105 Dexter Avenue, to establish a shared vision for increasing third-grade reading proficiency rates across the River Region.

The River Region Bold Goal Coalition, an initiative of the River Region United Way, is hosting a Formation Institute on Monday to help Coalition members learn about the root causes and other circumstances that explain why some students struggle to read proficiently by the end of the third grade. Cosponsored by MGMWERX and Alabama Power, the Formation Institute aims to find agreement among community leaders on the areas the Bold Goal Coalition can invest. Members of the area’s civic, community, and education communities are expected to participate.

Dr. Eric Mackey, the State Superintendent of Education, will address the Coalition at 11:00 AM.

Media is invited to Dr. Mackey’s presentation, and coverage is welcome. Representatives from the River Region United Way will be available for interviews about the Formation Institute’s goals.
