Our 360 News has confirmed that Sen. Del Marsh (R-Anniston) has stepped down as pro tem of the Alabama Senate. Majority Leader Greg Reed (R-Jasper) will become the new pro tem. The new leadership will take effect in 2021 when the new legislative session begins.
Sen. Clay Scofield (R-New Hope) will become the new Senate Majority Leader.
Although Republicans hold a super majority in the Alabama legislature, cooperation with Democrats will be important in addressing potential 2021 legislative agenda items such as appealing Alabama's monuments law and expanding early voting. Legislators may also need to approve changes to the Alabama constitution drafted by the Legislative Reference Service in this legislative session or the next--a process the majority of Alabamians voted for on Nov. 3 with the passage of Amendment 4.
This story will be updated with any additional announcements.
